Rightly so, Mrs Norman you should be so proud of both your son and grandson. Thank you Matt for getting the real story out. The media, unfortunately, most of the time never tells the real story or the truth. An example of this would be a very ordinary journalist claiming Peter had four drink driving convictions. Why do good people have to suffer so much for being good people? What a great athlete Peter was. I had no idea Australia had such a fast male sprinter back in 1968, particularly before so much improved technology and sports studies, just pure natural speed and athletic ability – wonderful. Some people win plenty of medals and awards in life but don’t make their mark. These three brave, gifted and caring men really made their mark.

We are so proud to be part of such a special day and we will celebrate it always. For Kross it has been an amazing experience as he celebrates his 12th birthday on Sat 13 October.

Krossy is my Nephew!! i am soooo proud ..He , my sister (his mum) & I went to see this film together a week before the opening of the OLYMPICS. I was considering taking my 2 sons aged 9 & 7 ..but they were at school..( It was the middle of the day..Kross is home schooled) It is NEVER TOO EARLY to teach kids about injustice’s in this world..these kids are our future…giving them information..& making them aware is our DUTY.

Dear Nicola,

I am so humbled by the incredible support from the UK. Since it’s release the UK has shown Peter so much respect and EMPATHY! It shocks me that the English have so much heart but the Australian system are still playing down the whole thing. When you think how long it took the Government to appologise to the Aboriginal people I don’t hold too much hope for the AOC to say sorry. Thanks again for your support.

Not only is it sad, but very dangerous when educated people (journalists) print hurtful and untrue stories, like this one. To mention the drink driving, says it all really. I wonder, has this gentleman never made a mistake, before? And how are the two things related? Printing things like that really speaks volumes!

Peter Norman made a stance that day to wear his human rights badge and stand with Tommie Smith and John Carlos – showing the world that they all believed in the same thing – Human Rights!

Well done Matt! The story of your uncle is very much alive in London. We think Peter Norman is AMAZING!

I’m so glad you wrote back to the newspaper. Well written. Tall poppie disease in Australia is getting worse. If he doesn’t think Canberra should say sorry then he should start thinking about his own apology. Peter Norman did so much more for so many more people. I met Peter every year when he was part of the Mooama special athletics. My son is dissabled and he couldn’t believe it when he got to meet Peter. The second year, Peter remembered his name and signed a photo that my son Marcus had taken with him. He still to this day keeps it above his bed. Peter wrote on top of the photo “you are my hero! Love from your mate Peter Norman”. Brings a tear to my eye knowing we lost such a beautiful man. Thank you Matt for keeping his spirit alive. You’ve done a wonderful thing. Love Erin.

Below is an email that I sent to Andrew Leigh:

Dear Andrew,

Like many Australians, I was alerted to Peter Norman’s story in the tv documentary “Salute”. After his silver medal in 200 metres in the 1968 Mexico, Peter achieved numerous qualifying times for both the 100 and 200 metre events prior to the Munich Olympics in 1972….but the Australian Olympic Committee chose not to send any sprinters to Munich. Peter’s crime was wearing a badge in support of human rights.

Again at the Sydney Olympics, Peter was overlooked during the opening ceremony in carrying the Olympic torch within the Olympic Stadium prior to Cathy Freeman lighting the Olympic Flame.

Shame on the Australian Olympic Committee for continuing to deny the true reasons for Peter’s non selection for Munich and for their embarrassment at his courageous act in 1968. You broke Peter’s heart….literally.

Andrew – stay the course…remember Peter’s courage…make the AOC apologise…and dont give up until they do.

I am so pleased this has happened and due credit is given to a great man. And Thank You to the film makers too. This was a very important event to me for my “political” development but I knew nothing of Peter’s part in it until now and I am the richer for it.

All three athletes are heroes, in my eyes. Their peaceful, yet, powerful demonstration, spoke volumes. Because of it, they all suffered – financially, professionally, and personal tragedy. Human beings such as these, inspire me. I’m so glad that I have been made aware of this story. However, the Australian government needs to rectify things and ensure that Peter Norman is recognised for his athletic achievements.

I was 19 & remember watching the race on TV with my parents & sisters. When Tommie Smith & John Carlos raised their hands in salute we were ecstatic.We all jumped up & cheered. We knew they were going to be in trouble but had no idea how much….. I didn’t learn about Peter Norman’s contribution till many years later. All three men were very very brave. And despite their appalling treatment they pushed the barrier big time on Human Rights. Que hombres!

I’m old enough to remember being delighted by the athletes’ actions in 1968, so I’m very pleased by the idea of this film and by other actions (e.g. John Carlos on BBC radio, recently) that remind us today about the issues … which have not gone away, either in the USA or elsewhere.
But I’m disappointed at the DVD being marketed via Amazon, which is not famous for the respect it gives to its own employees. I wonder if the people involved with the film have checked that sales route thoroughly enough?

A moving and brilliant documentary showing the courage of those three magnificent athletes, and reminding us about the public price you pay for standing up for justice, but also the personal strength and integrity that’s gained from such an action.
I saw the documentary around three years ago in Perth, Western Australia.
I’m hoping to purchase the DVD to show to friends and family.

Matt, this film has always remained the best documentary film I have ever watched. I draw you to the compliment. I hate the Olympics and I don’t like too many docs. Your film had me crying through it, when it ended and long after I switched it off. Very powerful.
