Well done Peter Norman
An incredibly decent human being. And–as happens with the majority of decent folk throughout the pages of history–Peter Norman was dealt some very raw deals by life. This quite purposeful behavior among his countrymen was a range that spanned the whole culture: athletic groups, its press, its religious groups, political leaders…the lot of them. I find his quiet decency more inspirational than I have found virtually all those others who have assisted the cause of just fairness in this world. It is only going to be through our stories–such as this one–in any number of media that we will be able to reinforce the heroic actions of such individuals. Their purpose is to demonstrate Truth to Power (rather than merely speak it to them), which is action. Only when followed up repeatedly by yet more action does a single act take on the force of an engine. His exemplary life was that kind of a force. Now that more people are hearing his story, these actions can and will more readily enter the culture–since someone before them did the heavy lifting.
Dear Lee,
What a beautiful and kind thing you wrote about my uncle Peter. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I couldn’t agree more!!! Thank you!
